California teen inspires others recovering from brain injuries

Every year, 1.7 million people suffer a brain injury. Car and boat accidents are the leading cause, a reminder that a person's life can change dramatically in an instant. This is what the 19-year-old sister of California ultimate fighter Urijah Faber discovered recently when she was involved in a car crash that left her in a coma. When she awakened eight days later, surgery had already been performed to treat her brain injuries and she was informed that she had suffered a collapsed lung, a fractured tailbone, and was paralyzed on the right side of her body.

Fatal accident kills parents, brother of newborn

Although this accident did not take place in California, our San Diego readers may well be saddened and shocked to hear of a grievous motor vehicle accident that happened in late February. A family of four, returning home from the hospital with a newborn baby boy, was hit head-on by a driver who had crossed lanes into oncoming traffic. Tragically, the fatal accident left three of the four dead with the 2-day-old newborn as the sole survivor of the crash.

Drunk driver sentenced for San Diego accident

Last week, a San Diego man received a criminal sentence of one year in a work furlough program in connection with a drunk driving accident that left a young woman with severe injuries. The man, who reportedly pleaded guilty to driving drunk last fall, was also sentenced to five years of probation and a five-year suspended jail sentence that will be imposed if he violates the terms of his probation.

Car accident lawsuit filed against Lindsay Lohan in California

Late last month, Lindsay Lohan again made headlines a California woman filed a personal injury lawsuit against the actress. In the suit, the plaintiff alleged that she had been hit by Lohan's car while she walked through an intersection. The auto accident suit was the second of its kind to be filed against Lohan last month. In sum, Lohan has defended against four personal injury lawsuits in the past few years, as well as multiple criminal charges for driving under the influence.

California woman dies in head-on collision

A head-on collision resulting from high winds killed a California woman on Highway 18 in Waterman Canyon on January 28, 2012. California Highway Patrol officers and the San Bernadino police closed the stretch of Highway 18 where the auto accident occurred for several hours in order to investigate.

California car-train collision leaves three dead

A weekend collision between a sport-utility vehicle and a California light rail train has resulted in three fatalities and multiple injuries, according to law enforcement authorities. Although police and local transit officials continue to investigate the fatal accident, they believe that the SUV drove around the crossing arms and onto the track just before it was struck by the train.

It may seem like a no-brainer, but a new report is claiming that the states with the safest roads are those with the strongest traffic safety laws. Specifically, California and the 17 other states that ranked the highest in the annual report from the Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety also spend the least on car, truck and motorcycle accidents and related costs.

Economist says that driving drunk is less risky than walking drunk

Earlier this week, economist Steven Levitt went on the popular "Freakonomics" radio show and made a very interesting statement: "If you're faced exactly with two choices, walking drunk or driving drunk, you absolutely should drive drunk," he said.
