Dog bite victims in California have rights and legal options

Any kind of animal bite should be taken seriously. People may not realize the pain, suffering and costs associated with being the victim of a dog bite. Those in California who are victims of dog bites deserve to know their rights and understand that compensation may be needed in order to move forward with their lives after they heal.

A dog bite injury can be costly for a California victim

A dog bite can be a life-changing incident, particularly for a young victim or a victim who suffers serious injuries. When a person is the victim of a dog bite injury in California, that person has certain legal rights and protections. In addition, he or she may want a clear picture of his or her options related to both the physical and financial damage the dog bite has caused.

I provoked a dog and was bitten, can I still be compensated?

In California, the courts hold animal owners accountable for their pet's behavior and, in kind, animal owners are responsible for protecting their pet from being put into a situation that could allow it to harm someone else. This means that even if a pet attacks a person who is antagonizing the pet, the owner could still face the real risk of being held accountable. There is typically a cap to compensation in situations where an animal reacted to provocation. However, it is very rare that a pet owner is not held legally and financially accountable for an injury caused by the person's pet when authorities are notified.
