Dog Bite Awareness Week approaches: Prevent bites!

Did you know that around 5,800 postal workers were attacked by dogs while on the job in 2019? It's a risk that many people face, but postal workers are often put into positions where they could be attacked by pets or animals who are territorial, fearful or aggressive.

June 14 to June 20 is going to be the 2020 National Dog Bite Awareness Week in the United States. This year's theme is, "Be Alert: Prevent the BITE."

Postal workers take care never to walk into an area with a dangerous or threatening dog, but that doesn't mean that others shouldn't help prevent bites, too. Owners can help by keeping their dogs in separate rooms or behind locked doors when packages or mail is delivered. Owners may also want to have a place for the post office to leave their mail, such as a mail box outside a fence, so that their pet is never in the same area with the worker.

Did you know that the post office is able to ask owners of threatening or aggressive pets to pick up their mail at the post office? If the pet is not restrained, then the postal worker does not necessarily have to deliver the mail to the home. If the pet roams, this could impact a whole neighborhood as the postal worker decides that it's not safe to exit the vehicle.

As a postal worker, you deserve to be protected. If you're hurt on the job, you may be able to seek workers' compensation for your injuries and hold the owner responsible for their dog's behavior.
