Road construction workers face real hazards every shift

You love your job, and you enjoy being outside while you work. What you're not in love with is the fact that drivers aren't always cautious around your work zone. You see people speed through the area going well over the speed limit, let alone the speed that is posted for a construction zone. You've seen drivers collide with barriers put in place to protect you and your team, too.

Working on and near roadways is a hazard, and there is always the potential that you could be hit and hurt or killed. In fact, the Federal Highway Administration reports that an average of 773 people die each year as a result of work zone crashes based on data from between 1982 and 2017.

So, what can you do to protect yourself and your team?

One of the first things to make sure you and your team understand is that passing traffic is a real danger. Even when wearing a reflective vest, hard hat and brightly colored pants, the reality is that some drivers still will not slow down and could threaten your safety. Your team should always be aware of their surroundings and be ready to move if a vehicle does not seem to be turning away from or driving around the work area.

While the use of barriers, the right personal protective equipment and good lighting at night can all be beneficial in preventing workplace accidents, the truth is that there is no way to eliminate the risk to you or your co-workers completely. If you are hurt while on the job, that's the point when you'll want to look into workers' compensation.
