Postal workers use smart tools to avoid bites

You love your job, but one thing you don't love is all of the dogs that you have to see on your route. While most of them are wonderful, there are a few that you know would attack you if they got the chance.

As a postal worker, you may be able to seek workers' compensation if you're attacked by a dog while on the job. You could also have a personal injury claim, depending on when the bite took place.

Did you know that over 5,000 postal employees suffered dog-bite attacked in 2018?

According to the U.S. Postal Service, the number of employees who were attacked by dogs fell by 500 between 2017 and 2018, totaling 5,714. How are mail people reducing attacks? They're using technology.

One of the great pieces of technology being used today is a scanner used to confirm the delivery of packages or specific mail. If a worker has indicated that a dog was there in the past, it will pop up and let the other post officer know. The Package Pickup application does the same by asking customers to state if a dog is on the premises when they ask for the service.

If a dog is violent or dangerous, a post office worker may also ask that the owner comes to the post office or another local facility to pick up their mail until it can be guaranteed that the pet is retrained. These techniques, along with other bite prevention methods, help keep postal workers safe whenever they have to be around animals.
