File a claim if you suffer from a fall on the job

Falls are one of the leading causes of injury on the job. They can happen almost anywhere, from falling off a step ladder to falling from scaffolding stories above the ground. No matter where you are or what you’re doing, if you fall on the job and get hurt, you should be able to file a claim for workers’ compensation.

Workers who fall may do so for a number of reasons. Perhaps regulations weren’t followed, and an employer chose to use a ladder that was not designed for the project or scaffolding that wasn’t strong enough for the job. Maybe unexpected weather conditions threatened workers and caused a hazardous situation due to high winds unexpectedly.

The reality is that falls can happen in almost any workplace, so you need to know what to do if you’re affected.

What do you do after a fall?

Immediately after a fall, you should call 911 or have someone else dial for help. In serious cases, you may be unable to move or feel unwell. It’s best to remain where you are unless it’s dangerous to do so. That way, the emergency team can help move you slowly and safely.

Falls have the potential to fracture bones, particularly in the neck, back and ribs. If you have pain, make sure you tell others and don’t allow them to move you without the emergency team present. If you hit your head, you could have a concussion or another serious head injury that needs to be treated, so do your best to stay awake and alert until emergency help arrives.

After you go to the hospital and are stabilized, it’s up to you to let your employer know that you were hurt on the job. At that point, they should be willing to inform their insurance carrier and help you make a claim for workers’ compensation.

What should workers’ compensation cover?

Workers’ compensation should cover many different things including your medical bills, lost wages and training for a new job if you cannot return to the same job after you recover. Workers’ compensation is there to make sure you are not stuck paying for medical care due to your injury on the job. Keep in mind that you will not be able to sue your employer if you have accepted workers’ compensation, because it relieves them of liability for your injuries and the accident that occurred.
