Teen drivers and the 100 deadliest days of summer

Although residents in the San Diego area experience warm weather year round, the summer months are still an enjoyable time that individuals young and old look forward to. For the youth, it is time off from school and time when they can enjoy their time outside or traveling. And for teens, it is a period of time where they are often out with friends, driving at all hours of the day and night, going place to place. While teen drivers pose risks on the road any time of the year, the summer months are considered the most dangerous time.

From Memorial Day to Labor Day, this is considered to be the 100 deadliest days of summer. It is in this time frame that young drivers are more likely to drive distracted, intoxicated and recklessly, causing serious and fatal car accidents. When compared to the other days of the year, the rate of fatal crashes caused by teen drivers during this time period is 17% higher.

Generally, teen drivers are a vulnerable driver group. Due to their inexperience and more likelihood of being compelled to do activities such as texting while driving or driving while intoxicated, teen drivers have a higher probability of being involved in crashes when compared to other driver groups.

Despite the fact that teen drivers are not legally able to consume alcohol, it was found that one in six teen drivers involved in a fatal crash during this time period tested positive for alcohol. Reckless behavior is common with the driver group, and they are likely to engage in drinking and drinking, texting and driving, speeding and other distracting and negligent acts. Thus, when a crash occurs this summer or any other time of the year, it is important to consider the cause and liability of the crash.

When a negligent driver is to blame for a crash, he or she could be held liable through a personal injury action. This civil claim could help a victim recover compensation, which could be used towards losses such as pain and suffering, medical bills, rehabilitation, lost wages and other related damages. Although a monetary award cannot undo the harm caused by a crash, it could help offset the financial upset the accident has caused.
