Rate of fatal car accidents in California

The rate at which fatal car accidents occur varies from state to state. However, when looking at data in California and all other states across the nation, the number of fatal crashes occurring on a national level remains high and is concerning. With regards to the data collected in 2017, there were a total of 34,247 recorded fatal motor vehicle crashes that year. And, in these crashes, a total of 37,133 deaths occurred.

Based on these numbers, this equates to 11.4 deaths per 100,000, or 1.16 deaths for every 100 million miles traveled on a U.S. highway. When specifically looking at California, there were a total of 3,304 fatal crashes in the state during the year of 2017. This resulted in 3,602 deaths. Based on these numbers, this is a rate of 9.1 deaths per 100,000 people and 1.02 deaths per 100 million miles traveled.

Although the rate of fatal crashes in California is less than the national average, fatal car accidents are a concerning factor on California highways. In fact, when the statistics are broken down, the most likely type of fatal motor vehicle accident in the state involves pedestrians. According to 2017 data, 858 pedestrians died in motor vehicle crashes that year. That equates to 24 percent of the total fatal crashes in the state that year.

There are many causes for fatal crashes. A driver may be distracted, reckless or intoxicated, making it difficult to evade a collision. When a fatal crash does occur, surviving family members should take the time to explore the cause of the crash. If another driver is liable, it may be possible to hold them accountable through a wrongful death action. This could help with the recovery of compensation and offsetting the harms and damages associated with the crash.
