Drunk driving: A risk to everyone on the roads

There is never an excuse for getting behind the wheel of a vehicle while intoxicated, yet people do it every day. This is particularly hazardous when there are more people on the roads, like around holidays and special events. Despite that, those individuals aren't worried about their actions, even though they could lead to injuries and deaths.

Did you know that around 3.3 people per 100,000 were killed in alcohol-related crashes in 2017? While it may not seem like many people, the reality is that those people have families and friends who are seriously affected by the loss that an alcohol-related crash can cause. Even if people aren't killed in these crashes, they may end up with a lifetime's worth of serious injuries that change the way they experience life forever.

Alcohol-related crashes are declining, but they're still prominent

Alcohol-related crashes resulted in around 29 percent of all traffic fatalities in 2017, which amounts to around 10,874 people overall. This only includes situations where the driver had a blood alcohol content of .08 percent or higher, not crashes that had impairment (under .08 percent) as a factor. What you have to remember, as a result, is that the numbers are skewed. There are many drivers who were showing signs of impairment while well under the .08 percent limit, which also adds to the overall death toll once it's considered. The above doesn't consider how many people are injured in these crashes, either, which is a much higher number.

Drivers have to be considerate of others

It is a reality that drivers get on the roads and make poor decisions. Some people will decide to speed. Others will decide to pay attention to texts or phone calls. Still, others will drink and drive or become impaired with the use of drugs.

Drivers need to become more considerate of others. It's easy to put down a phone and pay attention to the road. It's a simple decision to park while eating behind the wheel. It's easy to call a ride-share service to get a car ride home if you've had too much to drink. People need to think more about their actions and the effects they could have, because a single poor decision could lead to a lifetime of consequences for many people, including the driver.

If you're hit by a drunk driver, you're not alone. People suffer from the negligent decisions of others every day. Stand up for yourself, because they should be held responsible.
