Get to know the statistics: Car crashes and their costs

Auto crashes have different costs associated with them, which are dependent on the facts of each case. However, looking at a number of crashes can give you an idea about how much a claim is worth.

Society does pay a significant portion of the costs associated with crashes. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports costs around $1 trillion including loss of life, loss of productivity and other factors.

The total number of collisions leading to death reached an all-time low in 2014. That year, there were 32,675 deaths as a result of crashes. However, a year later, the number of people killed in collisions rose to 35,092, a 7.2 percent increase.

How much is the average claim for property damage and personal injuries?

As of 2013 estimates, the average auto liability claim made for property damage alone was $3,231. If injuries were involved, claims averaged $15,443. Collision claims averaged $3,144, while comprehensive claims were around $1,621.

Of course, averages can be misleading when looking at your own case. In a situation where loss of life and extreme property damage takes place, you're more likely to have extremely high claims. Averages add in some of the highest claims as well as the lowest, so the reality is that there are people who have high claim values just as there are those with claims lower than the average.

It's also a possibility that smaller states will face fewer costs associated with collisions, but there is also a risk of having to pay more, since you may have to travel out of state to obtain the treatments or resources you need following a serious injury or death.

What should you expect if you are involved in a collision?

If you are in a car crash, you should report your injuries and save your receipts. Keep all documents related to your injury, like gas expenses to get to and from the hospital and medical reports about your ability to work. Everything you keep about the severity of your injuries and the costs associated with the crash will help you make a claim and get fair compensation.

It's a good idea not to take the first settlement you're offered unless you're positive that it's a great offer. You need to make sure you know what kind of care you may need in the future before you decide on a fair amount to resolve the case.
