Construction workers hurt when scaffolding falls

At least three members of a construction crew suffered what authorities described as serious injuries while working on a project in the San Diego area near Petco Park.

Authorities said that the workers were all on a scaffolding platform and were working about 16 feet above the surface. The platform upon which they were standing gave way without warning, causing the workers, and a bunch of the scaffolding and other equipment, to fall.

It was not apparent why the scaffolding gave way when it did, but California authorities in charge of regulating workplace safety are investigating this unfortunate construction accident.

Scaffolding is an important part of the construction industry, but it also presents a number of dangers, some of which might not be apparent to the naked eye. For instance, as this case illustrates, scaffolding is not as sturdy of a structure as, say, a building, and thus has a tendency to collapse suddenly. It is incumbent upon employers, those who build the scaffolding and those who are in charge of a construction site to make certain the structure is sturdy and that it complies with all applicable safety regulations.

These workers will likely be covered under California's workers' compensation system, and this will help them cover their medical bills and replace any income they lose as a result of having to stay home from work in order to recover. Depending on the outcome of the accident investigation and other factors, they may also have a claim against other parties responsible for this scaffolding fall.

Victims of similar construction accidents may also have legal options, and they should not hesitate to speak with an experienced construction accident attorney about those options.
