3 ways to make your morning commute safer

In the United States, approximately 120 million people commute to work every day. With that many people on the road, the risk of an accident is significant. This means that twice a day, on the way to work and on the way home, you have a higher chance of becoming involved in an accident than you do when you drive to the supermarket on Saturday morning.

Fortunately, there are some things you can do to reduce your risk of a car wreck the next time you drive through San Diego on your way to work. The following tips can help you stay safe during your commute.

Know the route inside and out

You probably know every turn and curve in the road between your house and your job, but the route is more than just knowing street names and the correct direction. If you have not already done so, become familiar with every aspect of your commute. This includes knowing if you will run into certain obstacles such as the morning trash pick up, active school zones and even areas that are under construction.

Limit the distractions

While you might be tempted to reduce your workload by checking your email while you are stuck in traffic, you should avoid any form of distracted driving. This includes eating breakfast while you drive, using your cellphone or even messing with your car's thermostat. Keep in mind that distracted driving is just as dangerous as drunk driving.

Avoid speeding

Many accidents occur due to speeding. Do not rush on your way to work. You might think that speeding will help you make up time if you are running late, but it could actually have severe consequences. On the lesser end of the spectrum, you might receive a speeding ticket and arrive to work even later, but things could turn out much worse if you end up in a collision.

The above tips can increase your safety during your work commute. However, even if you practice defensive driving and adhere to the traffic laws, it might be impossible to avoid a wreck with a negligent driver. If you have suffered an injury due to a collision with a reckless driver, you might be able to take legal action.
