Motorcyclist in San Diego area run over by motorist

A recent car accident in a San Diego neighborhood claimed the life of a motorcyclist. According to police, alcohol was a factor in this tragedy.

Reports say that a young man who was driving a passenger vehicle initially stopped for a red light at an intersection. However, for reasons that police could not explain, the driver then attempted to make a left turn on a red light. In the meantime, the motorcyclist was also trying to pass through the intersection, and the driver who made the unexpected, and illegal, turn hit the biker. The motorcyclist got pinned underneath the car and died at the scene of the accident.

In the mean time, police arrested the driver of the other vehicle, accusing him of driving under the influence of either alcohol. It is not clear what charges the man will ultimately face in criminal court, and police are still investigating the accident and are asking the public to come forward with any information they might have about the accident.

If anything, this case serves as important reminder about how vulnerable California motorcyclists are in the event of an accident. Because a motorcyclist was involved, what might have been an accident that just left a couple of people without their cars and with a few scrapes and bruises turned in to a tragic fatal accident. Motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable to becoming victims of drunk drivers, who are much less likely to see and respond to motorcyclists on the road.

A motorcyclist who is injured by a drunk driver or, in the case of a fatality, that motorcyclist's family, have legal options for pursuing compensation from the drunk driver or that driver's insurance company.
