Get compensated the right way after a workplace accident

When you work in construction, you know that every day that goes by without an injury is a gift. Injuries happen all the time in your industry as a result of simple mistakes, negligence and faulty equipment. There's no way to prevent every accident, but on the whole, you can prevent major catastrophes.

Recently, you suffered a fall as a result of defective equipment. You are covered by workers' compensation, which means you'll be able to seek out the money you need for medical bills, lost wages and other needs while you recover. Keep in mind that your employer may only be one entity that needs to cover your losses. In this case, if the problem with the equipment was a true defect, the manufacturer is also liable.

What are you entitled to under workers' compensation?

Under workers' compensation, you're entitled to medical care first and foremost. If you're hurt on the job, don't worry about filing a claim before you get medical help. Call for emergency services or head to the hospital immediately. Once your condition is stable, your employer can file a claim with the workers' compensation division on your behalf while reporting the incident.

You may receive temporary disability payments if you can't return to work because of your disability related to the accident. The payments only cover part of your wages. Normally, these benefits provide around two-thirds of your average weekly pay. If your doctor verifies that you can't work, you'll receive temporary disability payments within a few weeks of your injury.

In the case that you can't return to work, you can apply for permanent disability. In some cases, you can recover enough to work in a different part of your job by going through vocational rehabilitation. This provides the skills you need to work in a more appropriate field for your medical condition.

These are a few things to know about workers' compensation. There are other ways you could obtain compensation in some situations, so it's a good idea to look into all of your options.
