NHTSA applies five-star rating to measure rollover rates

Rollover accidents are one of the deadliest types of accidents drivers can get involved in. Rollover accidents account for one-third of all fatalities but are responsible for one one-in-ten serious accidents that require a tow-away. Thus, rollovers do not occur that frequently but when they do, rollover accidents are responsible for a disproportionate number of deaths.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) was tasked by Congress with (1) ascertaining the cause of rollover accidents and (2) reducing the number of rollover accidents. NHTSA first commissioned a study that examined the reasons of the accidents.

NHTSA determined that all accidents are caused by the interrelation of three factors:

  • The driver's choices;
  • The environment; and
  • The car.

NHTSA noted that many rollovers are heavily influenced by choices, such as drinking and driving, and by the environment, for instance, curved roads. NHTSA controlled for those two factors, and the result was the five-star rating system.

NHTSA rates all cars on the five-star system. Five-stars denotes a vehicle that has a low rollover rating and a one-star indicates the vehicle has a high rollover rating. NHTSA ranked most vans and SUVs as either two or three stars, whereas passenger cars were rated as four-stars or greater.

If you were seriously injured in a car crash, you might want to contact a lawyer for legal assistance. Serious accidents, like rollovers, are dangerous and often result in substantial injuries. If your injuries are severe, the other driver's insurance policy may not cover all of your medical bills. If that happens, your only recourse is to sue the other driver for the difference. A lawyer can help you file the claim to ensure that you receive fair compensation for your injuries.
