Fatal accident kills teen pedestrian; driver flees scene

It is an unfortunate reality that car accidents will happen in San Diego and across the country. Some of them are due to recklessness on the part of drivers, because of driving under the influence or some other transgression. Others happen due to circumstances. One thing that is universal for these accidents is that a driver is required to stop after it has happened. But, there are times when drivers flee the scene. This is particularly egregious when it is a pedestrian who was hit and the accident resulted in a fatality. Those who have been affected by this type of incident need to be aware of their potential right to file a wrongful death claim.

According to a recent report, a 16-year-old high school student was hit by a car and killed. The accident happened as the student and a friend were walking at around 11:50 p.m. The vehicle, a black four-door car, was driving at high speed when it hit the teen. Emergency services were called and he was declared dead. The vehicle took off after the crash and did not return. Law enforcement is in the process of looking for the vehicle, which is said to have lost its driver's side mirror at impact. There were witnesses to the accident, including a motorcycle rider who had a mounted camera that might have caught sight of the vehicle and the crash itself.

With a car accident, there are numerous potential outcomes. If, as in this case, there was a fatality, there will be funeral costs and the need for the family to come to grips with the unexpected loss of a loved one. Since the person who died in this case was so young, there is a significant emotional and practical calculation that must be considered as the family thinks about pursuing compensation. The loss of companionship and contribution will be substantial and it will all go into determining how to go about pursuing a wrongful death claim.

Since this was a hit and run accident involving a pedestrian, the first step that must be taken is finding the driver who committed the act. That is up to law enforcement. However, as the family is waiting for that to be resolved, they need to protect their own legal interests. Considering the circumstances of this fatal accident with a hit and run, they will likely have a strong foundation to file a legal case.
