Fatal accident in California leaves 2 dead

Two women were tragically killed on the afternoon of Oct. 8 when a motorcycle and a car collided not far from Inyokern. The California Highway Patrol responded to the fatal accident which claimed the lives of two 31-year-old women. So far, no charges have been filed against anyone involved in the crash.

The accident report confirms one of the two women was driving her motorcycle eastbound on Highway 178 when, for reasons unknown, the motorcycle collided with an SUV. The force of the impact threw both her and her 31-year-old female passenger from the motorcycle. Both women were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

The status of the SUV driver is unknown at this time. Police have not filed charges against that driver and are continuing to investigate the crash. They have scheduled an autopsy for the motorcyclist to determine cause of death and also whether she may have been intoxicated or otherwise impaired when the crash occurred. Similar tests will likely be conducted on the other driver.

Sometimes a fatal accident does not have a clear-cut cause, but it is incumbent upon California Highway Patrol to continue to investigate the accident until the cause becomes clear. If one or both drivers are found to be materially responsible for the collision, wrongful death lawsuits may become viable options for the families left behind. In either case, the family of the passenger is entitled to file in civil court, but if the SUV driver is found to be in the wrong, the family of the motorcyclist could also file suit.
