4 ways to keep your dog and others safe this Halloween

If you have been following our blog, you may have seen our post about how to stay safe around neighborhood dogs this Halloween. If you own a dog, however, there are a few things you can do, too, to help keep trick-or-treaters and your dog safe this Halloween.

As we discussed in our last post, dogs can become easily excited when there is a lot of traffic in and out of the house. Depending on how your dog reacts to these conditions, it could lead to a situation in which someone gets hurt. A small child could get knocked over or scratched or even bit, turning a fun night into a serious situation.

To keep everyone - including your dog - safe this year, consider these four tips:

1. Keep your dog inside. There may be a lot of activity at your house on Halloween. Keeping your dog indoors can help keep her from getting overly excited. You might even want to consider crating your dog or keeping her in a room away from the front door if it is particularly excitable.

2. Keep your dog occupied. Turn on the TV or music so your dog isn't too distracted by the noise at the front door. Giving him a bone, treat or Kong can help him stay busy and out of trouble.

3. Close the curtains. If your dog barks at passersby or people who come to the door, it may be best to close the curtains so she can't see outside. If she barks at the doorbell, consider disconnecting it for the night or meeting trick-or-treaters at the door.

4. Pay attention. Keep a careful watch over your dog when trick-or-treaters are at your house. Some kids are afraid of dogs, and excited dogs can jump or nip at the youngsters. If your dog does become too excited, tell children to act like trees by standing still and folding their hands while you get your dog under control.
