4 tips for avoiding dog bites this Halloween

As the saying goes, dogs are man's best friends. People of all ages think of dogs as being cute, cuddly and playful pets - and many of them are. It is easy to forget, however, that dogs are still animals.

Even well-trained dogs can be unpredictable, especially in new situations with new people. Halloween is a prime example.

When a house gets numerous visits from children in costumes, dogs can become nervous or overwhelmed. If you are planning to take your children trick-or-treating in San Diego this year, it is worth taking some time to teach them about how to stay safe around neighborhood dogs.

Here are a few tips to get you started:

  1. If a dog is present at a house you visit, wait for the owner to restrain it. Stay still and calm, and do not move toward the dog. If you are uncomfortable, tell the owner that you do not want to be near the dog.
  2. If a dog escapes from a house or you run into a loose dog, stand still and act like a tree by folding your arms and looking at your feet. Stay this way until the owner is able to regain control of the dog or the dog moves on.
  3. Avoid houses where you can hear a dog barking. If the dog is already worked up or excited, it is best to move on to the next house.
  4. When you come across someone walking their dog on Halloween, do not pay it too much attention. With so many people out and about in costume, Halloween can be stressful for dogs. Even if you know the dog, it may not recognize you if you are in costume.

While these are a few steps you can take to protect yourself from being bitten or attacked by a dog on Halloween, it is important to remember that dog owners are responsible for their pets.

Pet owners in California should have insurance to cover injuries caused by their animals. If you or your child is hurt by a dog this Halloween, an attorney can help you understand your rights and how to seek compensation for your injuries.
