Woman faces prison time after California bike accident

A woman has recently pleaded no contest after an accident that took the life of a bicyclist. The bike accident happened on a rural road in California some time ago. The woman may now face 19 years to life in prison as a result of the deadly incident which resulted in a second degree murder charge.

The car versus bike accident occurred as the woman was driving south. She hit the back of a bicycle. This sent the 48-year-old bicyclist into the air. Even though he was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, he died as a result of fatal head injuries.

The woman fled the scene of the accident after hitting the bicyclist. She was caught later by authorities and blood tests were conducted. It was determined that she was under the influence of alcohol and drugs. She was charged with felony hit and run causing death.

The 46-year-old woman already faces harsh criminal consequences, including prison time, for her role in the fatal bike accident. The family of the man who died as a result of her actions behind the wheel may have the ability to seek monetary recourse in a California civil court through a wrongful death suit. That family may have been saddled with extensive medical bills, funeral costs and the problems that come with lost wages. A wrongful death suit in civil court may help alleviate that burden for the family once they have dealt with the emotional turmoil the accident caused for them all.
