As the holiday season starts to gear up full force, many families are busy with the hustle and bustle of the season. Visits to loved ones’ homes to engage in family gatherings and traditions or afternoon filled with baking cookies and other holiday treats are what the holiday is all about, for many. However, in addition to full tummies, San Diego County emergency rooms are also busy treating patients for a plethora of injuries and illnesses; some of which can be easily prevented.
It is important for families to be aware of what dangers are lurking in their home, or the homes of holiday hosts, to ensure that their holiday doesn’t involve an unfortunate visit to the ER.
Some common holiday dangers include:
- Choking and swallowing
While the lights on the tree are lovely, it is important to make sure that in an effort to make your tree merry and bright; you didn’t overload the electrical outlet and circuits. Overloaded circuits are one way that a fire can ignite.
Also, don’t forget to be mindful of discarded glasses that once contained “Aunt Betty’s” famous eggnog. Children love to mimic adults and may try to drink out of unmonitored glasses still containing alcohol. It doesn’t take much for a child to become affected by alcohol and too much can be very dangerous.
