Avoiding workplace accidents this holiday season

Workplace safety risks become an even bigger problem during the holiday season when crowds gather at stores and other locations. If you have ever been to a shopping center on Black Friday, then you know exactly what we are talking about.

For that reason, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is reminding employers to plan ahead to keep their workers safe. More specifically, OSHA has offered some advice on preventing crowd-related injuries.

While the entire set of guidelines can be viewed here, the recommendations include making sure crowd management and emergency planning take place well in advance of the event.

In addition to the crowds, another reason workplace injuries tend to spike during the holiday season is because workers are often tired and overworked, and therefore more susceptible to accidents.

In fact, according to the a study by the American Journal of Industrial Medicine, when an employee has been on the job for 12 hours, his or her risk of injury doubles compared to workers who have only been on the job for eight hours.

With all of that said, if you are one of the millions of Americans who will be working on Black Friday or putting in extra hours over the holiday season, be sure to use extra care to avoid injuries whenever possible.

If you do suffer an injury on the job, remember that you may be entitled to workers' compensation benefits to help cover your medical expenses, lost wages and other costs stemming from the injury. It's important to report any workplace accidents to your manager and get medical attention right away in order to protect your claim.

Working with an experienced attorney can also help make sure you get the workers' compensation that you deserve.
