The dangers of drowsy driving: What can you do to avoid a crash?

In our last two posts, we have talked about the people most likely to be involved in a drowsy driving crash and how your driving worsens when you haven’t had enough sleep. The news isn’t all bad, though. There are some things you can do to help prevent a fatigued driving accident in California.

Of course, the most obvious way to ensure you are not the cause of a drowsy driving crash is to make certain you always get an appropriate amount of sleep the night before you drive. The National Institutes of Health recommends that adults sleep for at least seven or eight hours each night. If you’re a young driver, the amount of sleep you need is even greater — between nine and ten hours every night.

Even if you get enough sleep, however, you could still be at risk of causing a drowsy driving collision.

For instance, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, individuals with sleep disorders who do not seek treatment could be a hazard on the road. Sleep disorders — such as sleep apnea — can prevent people from getting a good night’s sleep, when they don’t have a treatment program. Consequently, if you suspect you may be suffering from a sleep disorder, it is a good idea to see a doctor to obtain a diagnosis and start treating the condition.

In addition, if you have consumed alcohol or medications that cause drowsiness, you should rethink getting behind the wheel.

Other ways to avoid drowsy driving include taking regular breaks when you are driving long distances. If you are starting to suffer from the effects of fatigue — like yawning and drifting out of your lane — get off the road.

Following these safety tips could help ensure you do not cause a drowsy driving crash in San Diego.
