Protecting man’s best friend when riding in a car

We all take precautions when we’re driving. You never know when a negligent motorist is going to crash into your vehicle, so we make sure we’re safe. We buckle our seatbelt. We make sure our kids are properly secured in a car seat or booster seat. We avoid dangerous distractions while behind the wheel, like cellphones.

Of course, no matter how cautious we are, there is always the chance that another driver will cause a dangerous auto accident. When the worst happens and a collision takes place, you will want to be sure that all the human and non-human passengers in your vehicle are as safe as possible.

In previous posts, we’ve talked about steps you can take to make sure your children are safe in your car. Now, let’s cover how to protect your pets.

When traveling with an animal, you need to think about where your pet is going to sit while riding in your car. While it may be nice to have your dog or cat on your lap while driving, consider the distraction that could cause. The last thing you want to do is cause an accident because your pet suddenly started barking at a passing vehicle.

In addition, the front seat is not necessarily the safest place for a small animal. As children under 13 years of age are not supposed to sit in the front seat of a vehicle — due, in part, to the danger posed by inflating airbags — consider the harm your pet could suffer if sitting in the front seat.

Instead, think about traveling with your pet secured in a harness or carrier in the back seat. Not only will you be safer from distractions caused by your cat or dog, but your pet will also have a safer journey.
