New study says more bicyclists suffering injuries in US

Riding a bicycle has become an increasingly popular way to get around town in San Diego. While on a bike, you can enjoy the weather, work on a tan and travel to your destination. Despite these positive benefits, a recent study revealed that bicyclists need to make sure they are staying safe when on the road.

According to the study — which was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association — the number of bicyclists suffering injuries in accidents has been on the rise recently.

The researchers — who are based at the University of California, San Francisco — revealed that the number of people who needed medical assistance after suffering an injury in a bicycle crash rose 28 percent from 1998 to 2013.

In addition, the number of people who needed medical treatment in a hospital after a bike accident rose 120 percent during that period.

For cyclists in San Diego, it is important to mention that the number of bike crashes that took place on city streets increased significantly from 1998 to 2013. By 2013, 65 percent of all bike accidents were on a city street, compared to just 40 percent of such crashes in 1998.

Consequently, when you are riding your bike in San Diego, you need to make sure you are aware of your surroundings and taking precautions to be as safe as possible. In addition to other safety tips we have mentioned in previous posts, it is also a good idea to be wary when riding near large trucks. A truck driver’s large blind spot may prevent him or her from noticing you, particularly when he or she is making a turn.

Take the time to make sure you are safe when riding a bike in San Diego this year.
