Part I: The good news about drunk driving in San Diego

Typically, when a new study is released about drunk driving in the United States, the data is mostly negative. Recently, a new study has revealed some positive findings when it comes to drunk driving rates in San Diego and across California.

According to researchers from Temple University, the number of people getting behind the wheel when intoxicated has actually decreased recently in parts of our state.

The researchers are crediting the decline, in part, to the introduction of cost-effective ride-sharing services, such as Uber. In fact, the study revealed that when Uber was introduced in certain cities in California — including San Diego — the number of deaths caused by drunk drivers decreased between 3.6 and 5.6 percent.

The study found that the reduction in fatalities caused by drunk drivers was primarily seen when the more affordable Uber X was introduced in a county. In contrast, the more expensive Uber Black did not appear to lead to a decline in the number of drunk driving deaths.

According to Uber, these statistics reflect their data, which shows that the number of requests for Uber drivers increases significantly after bars close, when people are trying to find a safe ride home.

As we’ve mentioned before, after a night out drinking, using Uber or another ride-sharing service is a good idea to ensure you and your friends avoid a dangerous drunk driving crash.

In our next post, we will discuss the other side of the coin. Unfortunately, not all of the recent news about drunk driving in California has been positive. We will fill you in on the details later this week.
