Part I: Back to school safety tips for children

It’s that time of year again. Kids are gathering their new school supplies and heading back to class for another school year. With the excitement of going back to school, it can be easy to overlook some common safety hazards that accompany this time of year. Before your kids get into dangerous habits, take some time to talk to them about staying safe when they are going to and from school each day.

For instance, if you have a youngster who will take the bus to school, make sure he or she knows that they need to stay a safe distance from the curb while they are waiting for the bus. In most cases, you can teach your child to take five big steps back from the curb to make sure they are in a safe spot.

In addition, it is a good idea to remind kids to always look for cars before getting on or off the bus. Once a child has gotten off the bus, he or she should walk directly to the sidewalk and out of the road to avoid a dangerous crash.

If you have a child who is able to walk to school, make sure you go over the route with him or her before the first day. Teach your child to always walk on the sidewalk, when one is available. Kids should also learn to look both ways before crossing the street and to always cross in a designated crosswalk.

In some situations, it may make the most sense for your child to ride a bike to school. If that is the case, you will want to make sure your child has a helmet that fits properly. In addition, make sure your child rides in the same direction as traffic and follows all the posted street signs when on the road.

Even if you talked to your child about these safety issues last year, it is a good idea to review these tips again. You can never be too cautious when it comes to your child’s safety.
