New study says driver’s ed helps prevent car crashes

Watching your teen get behind the wheel and drive off on their own for the first time can be a scary moment for any parent. According to a recent study, however, there are steps you can take to help make sure your child is prepared for the new responsibilities of driving a car.

According to researchers, taking a driver’s education class significantly decreases the likelihood of your teen being involved in a dangerous collision on the road.

The researchers tracked 150,000 teens over an eight-year time span to determine whether taking a driver’s ed class had an effect on their safety. Just over 50 percent of the teens involved in the study took a driver’s ed class approved by the state. Those who did not take the class were able to obtain their driver’s permit by spending 50 hours behind the wheel while supervised by an adult.

The teen drivers who took the education class had lower rates of accidents and tickets during their first year behind the wheel.

In all, the motorists who did not take a driver’s ed class were almost 25 percent more likely to be involved a car crash that led to injuries or fatalities. Those drivers were also 16 percent more likely to be involved in a crash and 75 percent more likely to receive a ticket.

Consequently, before your teen gets behind the wheel, you may want to look into having him or her take a driver’s education class. While some questioned the effectiveness of such classes in the past, this most recent study seems to suggest it is worth the effort of attending a class. The last thing you want is for your new driver to be involved in a dangerous collision shortly after getting his or her license.
