Part I: Rising number of people dying in motorcycle crashes in CA

If you’ve ever ridden on a motorcycle, you probably understand the appeal. The wind in your face, traveling down an open road can erase all worries from your mind. Unfortunately, when other motorists are not paying attention and they fail to notice a motorcyclist, disaster can strike.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the roads in our state have gotten more dangerous for motorcyclists in recent years. In 2103, the number of motorcyclists killed in collisions increased to 475, up from the 467 deaths the year before. In addition, over 13,140 motorcyclists suffered injuries after being involved in a collision in 2013 — an increase from the 12,617 injuries suffered in 2012.

The rising number of motorcyclist fatalities is especially alarming when you consider that California has the most registered motorcycles of any state in the nation. In all, 830,000 motorcycles are registered in the state. Across California, there are an estimated 1.4 million motorcyclists.

With the high number of motorcyclists and the year-round pleasant weather in many parts of our state, it may be understandable that California sees such a high number of motorcycle accidents and fatalities each year. Consequently, all those on the road — motorcyclists and other drivers alike — need to take action to make sure motorcyclists are safe.

In fact, there are many ways motorcyclists can be proactive to help ensure their safety when out on the open road. In our next post, we will discuss some of the most important safety precautions to take before hitting the road.
