Are you a young construction worker? Here’s what you need to know

When you’re new to a job on a construction site, it’s normal to feel nervous or unsure of yourself in the beginning. There are a lot of dangerous machines around and you could get hurt if you don’t know how to use them the right way. Also, you may have to work high above the ground, making you worried about getting hurt in a fall.

The dangers for young workers in the United States are real. In 2013, 335 young workers died while they were on the job, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

If you are a new worker on a construction site, there are some things you should know to help you stay safe.

First, your employer has a responsibility to help keep you safe. When you’re new to a job, your employer should provide you with training to make sure you understand the dangers at your worksite. If you don’t understand something, don’t be afraid to ask questions.

When you’re on the job, you may be required to use safety gear. For example, if you’re working above the ground, you may have equipment that will help protect you if you fall. Make sure you understand how to use that equipment.

If you get hurt on the job, you need to protect yourself. Make sure you see a doctor right away so you understand your injuries. In many cases, you may need to take time off work to recover.

When you’ve been hurt at work, you should think about filing for workers’ compensation benefits. In addition, you may want to file a personal injury lawsuit. Workers’ compensation benefits can help you get money for your hospital bills and the wages you would have earned on the job. A personal injury lawsuit can help you recover for other damages, like pain and suffering.
