Drive slowly on rainy San Diego days

Last week, the heavy rainfall in San Diego led to a sharp increase in the number of auto accidents in the city. In all, there were 182 motor vehicle accidents in the county, according to the California Highway Patrol. On a clear day, the CHP usually sees between 100 and 170 car crashes.

It is important to remember when you're driving in the rain that you need to take special precautions to make sure you stay safe.

The California Highway Patrol makes specific recommendations, especially that you should slow down when on the road. In fact, it is a good idea to drive under the speed limit when there is heavy rain.

In addition, you must turn on your headlights when driving in the rain, according to the law. Having your headlights on will help make sure other drivers can spot you easily on the road.

You may also want to leave a greater distance than usual between your car and the vehicle you are following. That way, if they suddenly slow down, you will have time to break safely and avoid spinning out.

Finally, if you are in an accident, do your best to get your car off the road and in a safe spot. You want to be sure you avoid a second accident by removing yourself from harm's way.

What do you do to stay safe when driving in unpleasant weather conditions?
