Are you at risk of being involved in a pedestrian and car accident?

There's no doubt that Americans love their cars and, in the vast majority of U.S. cities, personal vehicles remain the dominant mode of transportation. In more recent decades, however, there has been a push in many metropolitan areas to invest in and promote alternative means of transportation including biking and walking.

For pedestrians and bicyclists in cities like San Diego, attempting to share the road with cars and trucks can be challenging and, at times, downright dangerous. Even in cases where pedestrians have the right of way, if involved in an accident with a motor vehicle, he or she will be the clear loser and likely suffer serious, debilitating or fatal injuries. It's important, therefore, that pedestrians take steps to protect against being hit by motorists.

Speeding, aggressive maneuvers and distracted driving are all dangerous driving behaviors that are cited in contributing to millions of motor vehicles accidents each year. For pedestrians, these types of driving behaviors are not only dangerous, but can prove to be deadly.

To protect against being involved in a car and pedestrian accident, walkers must always exercise caution when crossing the street. This is true even in cases where a pedestrian uses and crosswalk and has a walk signal as inattentive or speeding motorists may fail to see a pedestrian. It's also wise to always utilize sidewalks or, if no sidewalk is available, to walk on the far shoulder of the road facing traffic.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, every day in the U.S. an average of 445 pedestrians seek emergency medical treatment for car accident-related injuries. To prevent becoming a statistic, pedestrians must be aware and vigilant at all times. In cases where an individual is hit by a motorist, it's wise to consult with an attorney.
