World Cup brings new attention to brain injuries

The connection between sports and brain injuries is not a novel concept. However, most people equate the American style of football to the injury, not the more commonly known version of football played throughout the world: soccer. The World Cup has brought attention to how the sport of soccer is also potentially connected to brain injuries

In addition to bringing attention to the potential for injury, The World Cup also tends to lead to an increase in participation in soccer. Although the sport is a great way for kids to meet new friends, develop large motor skills and a great part of an active and healthy lifestyle, parents may have concerns about the potential damage associated with a lifetime of hitting headers. One scientist looking into the matter recommends parents limit the number of headers kids take, including drills at practice and to take a break during the year instead of playing the sport all year. The scientist also advises against overinflating the ball, noting that "harder is not better."

Soccer and other sports are just one way that people can suffer brain injuries. Another common cause is involvement in a car accident. If a car accident is caused by the reckless or negligent action of another driver, compensation may be available to help cover the costs associated with the injury. This could include medical treatment and rehabilitative measures.

Those who are the victims of car accidents or other events that lead to brain injury should contact an experienced head trauma attorney to discuss their legal options and better ensure any right to remedies is protected.
