Brain injury leads to misdirection, prison time for San Diego man

A Marine combat veteran from San Diego is currently imprisoned in Mexico. A recent article by Fox News states that the man crossed the border from California into Mexico after he made a wrong turn. He had three legally-purchased weapons in the vehicle at the time he crossed the border. The man is currently in custody since Mexico has laws against carrying weapons over the border.

The report notes that the whole incident is likely connected to a brain injury the man received while serving in Iraq. During his time in combat, he was injured in an explosion caused by an improvised explosive device (IED). The accident resulted in a loss of consciousness and multiple stitches to the man's head. 

The case provides an interesting example of the many affects a traumatic brain injury (TBI) can have on one's life. In this instance, a side effect referred to by some as directional disorientation may have played a role in the man's arrest. He had a reputation for getting lost and heading the wrong direction. Instead of heading North on a well known route to return to his residence he would occassionally get turned around and head East. 

Disorientation is not an uncommon symptom of a TBI. Other symptoms of a mild injury can include headaches and difficulties concentrating. Complications connected to the TBI can progress depending on the severity of the injury.
