May is Motorcycle Awareness Month: Tips to avoid accidents

Recent research is being analyzed to help get a better understanding of the common causes of motorcycle accidents. The timing is fitting, since May is Motorcycle Awareness Month. The research, out of Texas Tech University, notes that motorcycle accidents are often unconnected to the rider's ability. Instead of being caused by careless riding, poor decision making or an inability to properly control the bike, many accidents are connected to basic physics.

A Psychology professor with the prestigious university is analyzing data about motorcycle crashes and finding that the size of the bike plays a role in distance perception. As a result, those who are used to driving and calculating the distance of oncoming cars and other larger vehicles are more likely to misjudge the distance of a motorcycle when making decisions. These decisions could include when to progress with a left hand turn. A miscalculation on the safety of the turn could lead to deadly accidents.

Those who are injured in these accidents may be able to qualify for compensation to help cover the high cost of medical rehabilitation, treatment and other bills associated with any injuries received from the crash. Qualification may be available under the basic legal theory of negligence.

Essentially, negligence is a legal term that refers to a driver's duty to safely operate his or her vehicle. If the driver fails to drive safely and causes an accident which leads to injuries, the driver may be liable for the costs associated with the accident.

If you were injured in a motorcycle accident and believe your injuries are connected to another driver's negligence, contact a motorcycle accident attorney to discuss your legal options.
