Is trash hauler liable in fiery San Diego crash?

It may be that the accident is still under investigation. There were a lot of vehicles reportedly involved in the fiery pile up on Interstate 15 near Poway Road Thursday, so there may be a lot of issues to sort out.

The count, according to the California Highway Patrol, was six, including one car that witnesses say caught fire and then exploded within about 30 seconds of the crash. Officials say the person driving that car suffered burns as a result of the wreck and had to be taken to the hospital.

One of the major questions that authorities, and possibly the injured driver, will likely want to determine is whether the lion's share of the responsibility for the multi-vehicle crash rests with a trash hauler. According to witnesses, some plastic containers being transported by the trash truck fell out, causing drivers in vehicles behind to swerve and collide.

The car that eventually exploded apparently caught fire after flipping over. Several brave individuals saw the flames licking at the car and dodged through oncoming traffic to reach the car and pull the driver to safety before it blew up.

Many readers may be unaware that those in the trucking industry are subject to tough regulatory standards for safety. If even one small detail about how a load is distributed or secured is overlooked, it can result in a truck accident. Physical injury and death is too often the result.

Any individuals who suffer as a result have a right to seek compensation for their injuries and owe it to themselves to work with an attorney to assess their options.

There have been no reports we're aware of to indicate that the trucking company or the driver in this case has been cited for any violations.
