Pit bull in quarantine after unprovoked Rolando attack

The world can be a scary place. Taking precautions to protect yourself can make sense whether you live in San Diego or some quiet bedroom community. For some people that protection might be in the form of a gun. For a woman in the Rolando neighborhood, it took the form of a 3-year-old pit bull by the name of Fatal.

Fatal is now being held in animal control quarantine, this after he allegedly attacked two men without any apparent provocation and sent them both to the hospital. Fortunately, their injuries are said to be non-life threatening.

No one would deny that a person has the right to protect themselves against harm. But if a dog's rampage is the result of owner negligence in keeping the animal under control in the absence of a threat, those who suffer an attack have a right to seek compensation for their injuries.

Whether any threat existed to prompt Fatal's actions Monday could be a key factor in deciding whether he is allowed to return to his owner in a couple of weeks.

Her story is that she was standing outside her home Monday afternoon when a man came walking by. For some unexplained reason, the woman says she felt threatened and she says the dog, watching from inside the house, must have sensed her fear and reacted.

She says he came running from the house, bolted through a gate in the fence of her yard and went after the man.

The victim got away with the help of two other individuals, but then the dog went into a nearby electrical repair business and attacked a worker there. It's not clear how the dog was finally brought under control.

Neighbors of the woman describe Fatal as a nuisance. But Fatal's owner says "it's scary out there" and that the dog is simply her family's beloved protector.
