What should you do after a hit-and-run in California?

A City Heights man was the victim of an odd hit-and-run Friday morning. A Ford Taurus reportedly crashed into the man's home on Gateway Drive near Home Avenue, and then the driver got out of the vehicle and ran away, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.

Police later learned that the same car crashed into two parked vehicles as well.

Fortunately, it does not appear that anyone was injured in these collisions. And, the house sustained only minor damage.

The results of this car accident could have been much worse, and police are currently trying to find the driver. He or she is likely to face penalties for leaving the scene of an accident.

In California, drivers are obligated by law to stop after being involved in a car accident.

When people are involved in hit-and-runs, they should do the following, according to

  1. Do not chase the hit-and-run driver as this can  be dangerous.
  2. Note as much information as possible. Try to record the make, model and color of the runaway vehicle, as well as the license plate information if possible. If you see the driver, make a note of his or her appearance.
  3. Call the police in order to file an accident report, and of course seek medical attention as necessary.
  4. File an insurance claim and consider contacting a car accident attorney. Depending on whether the hit-and-run driver is apprehended and whether or not that driver has adequate insurance, it may be possible to recover compensation from that driver's insurance company or your own. It is often necessary to work with an attorney to ensure you receive all of the money that you deserve for your medical expenses, lost wages, property damage and pain and suffering after being involved in a car accident in California.
