Texting driver heads straight into a lake

Many San Diego residents may have heard the story on the morning news yesterday about a woman who drove into a lake while she was texting. While this car accident did not take place here in California, it has made international news.

Fortunately no one suffered serious injuries in the crash, but the accident is getting a lot of attention because the nature of the accident shows us just how distracting it is to text while driving.

According to a news report, the 25-year-old woman was driving a Hyundai Tuesday afternoon when she suddenly struck a tree and then veered off into a lake. The lake is reportedly about 20 yards away from the street that the driver was on before she became distracted and drove into the tree.

The driver was able to get out of the submerged vehicle, and she told police officers who responded to the crash that she had been texting while driving.

Although the accident is still under investigation, it has been reported that the woman will likely face criminal charges as a result of this crash.

This accident could have resulted in serious if not fatal injuries to the driver as well as others nearby. Texting while driving is extremely dangerous and it is crucial for people to avoid this irresponsible habit.

A recent study has found that almost 30 percent of car accident risk is due to cellphone use or texting. California drivers should cut their risks of getting into a car accident - and of hurting themselves and others - by putting down their phones.

Those who are injured by negligent drivers do have a right to hold them responsible under the law.
