Snoozing bus driver crashes in Alhambra, 8 injured

The commercial vehicle industry is highly regulated in the hopes of preventing catastrophic accidents. Regulations apply to bus and truck companies in regard to vehicle maintenance, drivers' hours and other things in order to ensure that these massive vehicles pose as little of a safety risk as possible. When companies or drivers buck regulations or fail to obey traffic laws, very dangerous collisions can occur.

On Tuesday, a Foothill Transit bus driver fell asleep behind the wheel in the San Gabriel Valley, and he crashed into a retaining wall on the 10 Freeway. Eight of the 14 people on board were injured.

The results of this bus accident could have been far worse.

The bus reportedly first struck the retaining wall, and then went across all lanes before crashing into the center wall and ultimately stopping in the carpool lane. It is very fortunate that the bus did not strike any oncoming vehicles.

It is also very fortunate that no one on board the bus suffered major injuries. Seven of the eight people injured reportedly were taken to hospitals with minor injuries. The eighth person suffered deep cuts to the arm.

Foothill Transit serves the San Gabriel Valley and it is a multi-city agency. It does not appear that the agency has commented on the accident yet.

Those who are injured in accidents caused by negligence in California do have the right to hold negligent parties responsible for medical expenses and other costs. When the negligent party is a private or public transportation company, this can be a very difficult process. It is important to seek legal counsel to ensure one receives the compensation that is deserved.
