San Diego police detective is optimistic after motorcycle crash

A San Diego police detective who lost part of his leg last month due to a motorcycle accident is in good spirits, according to a recent news report. The 19-year veteran of the San Diego Police Department was off duty on June 14, and riding his motorcycle in Alpine, when he was struck by a sedan that turned in front of him.

This was one of two accidents in California recently that involved teenage drivers and motorcycle cops. In the other accident, a teenage girl, who was suspected of texting, triggered a chain-reaction collision in which a Chula Vista police officer was thrown from his motorcycle.

The Chula Vista officer suffered serious injuries.

In the more recent accident, the San Diego detective suffered internal injuries and a broken arm, in addition to losing the lower portion of his left leg.

He recently told U-T San Diego that he is grateful his injuries were not far worse, and that he is remaining positive.

The 17-year-old driver who struck him had a permit and was driving with her mother at the time of the collision.

While the San Diego officer has said he is not angry with the girl who struck him on his bike, these accidents are a reminder that California must continue to make progress when it comes to teens driving safely.

The car accident rates for teenage drivers, nationwide, are higher than for any other age group. Teenagers tend to be risky and novice drivers, and this combination can be very dangerous. Although teenagers may not realize it, in addition to the risks of injuries and even death, they can be held legally responsible when they cause car accidents.
