California woman is awarded $21.7M after jet ski accident

Most San Diego residents love a day spent on the water--either on the ocean, lakes or rivers. Of course, it is very important for everyone to operate their boats and other watercrafts safely in order to avoid accidents. When people are irresponsible, a day of boating can be very dangerous.

In some cases, however, people are injured not because of the negligence of other boaters but due to faulty watercrafts. Some San Diego residents may recall hearing back in 2008 that a 15-year-old girl was seriously injured on the Colorado River because of a defective jet ski.

The girl was riding the Polaris watercraft with two others when the watercraft apparently became uncontrollable. A collision with a boat ensued, and the girl suffered a traumatic and permanent brain injury.

The girl sued the manufacturer of the watercraft as well as the boat's drivers, and she has now been awarded $21.7 million, according to a recent news report.

According to the lawsuit, Polaris was aware of the defect that caused this tragic accident.

Polaris is no longer making the watercraft.

It has been reported that the driver of the boat involved in this collision was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

This case should remind California residents to excercise caution and responsibility when boating. There are rules of the water that must be followed. When people fail to follow the rules and boating accidents take place, very serious injuries and even death can result. Those who cause boating accidents may be held liable for injuries.
