Carlsbad man, 23, arrested after hit-and-run car accident

A 23-year-old Carlsbad man was jailed Wednesday after he was allegedly involved in a hit-and-run car accident. As of Thursday morning, it does not seem that he has been formally charged with any crimes, though such charges may be pending.

According to police, the man was driving his mother's 2007 Kia down Carlsbad Boulevard around 3:40 p.m. Tuesday and failed to stop for an officer who wanted to pull him over because he had been speeding.

The officer then reported that the man continued to try to evade him by driving on Interstate 5 before exiting on Poinsettia Lane. There, the driver crashed into another vehicle.

After the car crash, the man reportedly fled the scene and led officers on a chase through a shopping-center parking lot. A passenger who was in the Kia is said to have remained on the scene.

The man was later arrested at his mother's home on Avenida Encinas.

At this point, an estimate for the property damaged in the alleged hit-and-run has not been reached. The driver of the car that was struck has complained of back and neck injuries, but the full extent and nature of his or her injuries remains to be seen.

We understand that dealing with police can be frightening, and that panic is a natural reaction to something as scary as a car accident.

That being said, running away is rarely the right thing to do. In fact, it often makes matters worse. Problems are not going to resolve just because you put geographic distance between them and yourself. Rather, it is far better to address them head-on, seeking out legal help if and when you need it.
