101-year-old man killed in California pedestrian accident

Last month, a 101-year-old man was hit and killed by a 91-year-old woman in a Southern California crash. Both of the people involved in the pedestrian accident were well-known public figures in their city of Burbank, making the events of the fatal crash even more difficult for community members to come to terms with.

According to media reports, 101-year-old Otto Jensen, a former boxer and photographer, was crossing the street to get to the local senior center when he was struck by the car driven by 91-year-old Mary Beaumont, a retired school teacher and active community member and volunteer. Witnesses reported that the impact of the crash sent Jensen "flying through the air" and caused him to suffer fatal injuries. Beaumont was not injured in the crash.

Police are not yet sure what caused the crash. Although Jensen was not crossing in a crosswalk, he was doing so legally, police say. He had almost made it across the street when he was fatally hit.

One nearby resident says that he often seen local elderly residents cross at that busy intersection in order to get to the senior center on the other side. He has called police, he said, to report the unnecessary speed of the vehicles and the danger faced by pedestrians.

Jensen was born in Denmark, where he worked as a boxer until he immigrated to the United States in 1936. He moved to California and established his photography studio, at which he had continued to work until his death. He was well-known throughout Burbank, serving as the grand marshal of the city's centennial parade last year.
