Marine remains in coma after San Diego motorcycle accident

A Marine who was injured during one of his four tours in Iraq and Afghanistan is again fighting for his life following a hit and run accident caused by an alleged drunk driver. Following the motorcycle accident, the Marine was placed in a medically induced coma while doctors work to heal his serious head injuries.

According to police reports, the motorcycle accident occurred on a Sunday afternoon in Rancho Bernardo, near the Marine Corps Recruit Depot. The Marine was stopped on his motorcycle at a red light when he was struck from behind by a Chevrolet Blazer traveling at fast speeds. Following the crash, the driver of the Blazer did not stop, but kept driving.

Witnesses followed her to a nearby apartment complex, and then called the police. The driver was arrested and charged with felony driving under the influence causing great bodily injury and coma, and felony hit and run causing coma. If she is convicted, she could be sentenced to up to nine years in jail. If the Marine does not survive due to his injuries, her charges will likely be increased to manslaughter or a similar offense.

The 34-year-old Marine was taken by ambulance to the Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, where he was placed in a medically induced coma. His current prognosis is unknown.

The Marine has been a member of the Marine Corps for 17 years, serving four tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was engaged to be married in October of this year, but his fiancée says their wedding plans are now on hold until he recovers.
