Tragic Car Accident Involving a Toyota Prius Makes National News

It may or may not have had anything to do with faulty brakes, spontaneous acceleration or an electrical shortage. However, when you have a fatal car accident involving one of the recently recalled Toyota models, these are questions that will undoubtedly come up. Tragically, that was the case in Michigan on Sunday.

Around 3:30 in the afternoon, a Toyota Prius carrying four individuals shot over the median and struck an SUV head-on. Three of the individuals in the car, including the driver, were killed in the crash. The fourth, an 18-year-old, was seriously injured and remains hospitalized.

In the SUV, both the driver and front-seat passenger were killed. Three children aged 10 and under, also riding in the SUV, were rushed to the hospital with severe injuries. Names of the victims have not yet been released and the actual condition of those in the hospital remains undisclosed.

What is clear is that something went terribly wrong in the Prius. Whether the result of mechanical failure, driver error or inattention, the accident is a shocking reminder of how fragile life can be on the road.

State police are still investigating the crash, and the road was closed for close to four hours on Sunday while officers were conducting clean-up and investigatory operations. There has been no official opinion released yet on what might have caused the car accident.

More information on the crash is expected in the near future.
