Pacific Gas and Electric Faces Wrongful Death Lawsuits

Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) faces a number of wrongful death and personal injury lawsuits, some of which were filed on Monday in San Mateo County Superior Court, stemming from the gas pipeline explosion that occurred early last month. All told, eight people were killed in the explosion and resulting fires. More were injured and many last homes.

It wasn't the first PG&E gas pipeline explosion, but it was one of the worst. According to the complaint, since 2002, PG&E has been responsible for "more than 58 significant natural gas leaks and resulting property damage of millions of dollars in California."

The company, which is based in San Francisco, is accused of negligence and failure to provide for the safety of San Bruno residents by failing to relocate the pipeline to an area with less population density. The company is also accused of failure to properly inspect the pipeline, a problem PG&E faced in 2008 following a smaller explosion that killed one person.

PG&E has pledged to help rebuild the community, but city officials and those who lost homes and family members are skeptical. Revelations earlier this week that PG&E might try to buy some of the severely damaged homes was met with outcry from nearly all sides.

The company has not commented on the personal injury or wrongful death lawsuits filed against them, but a response is expected soon.
