Fatal Car Accident Likely the Result of Drunk Driving

| Aug 13, 2010 | Car Accidents |

The Jeep Cherokee smashed so violently into the back of the parked Nissan Altima that, when rescue workers arrived, the sedan’s trunk was basically in the front seat of the car. The vicious car accident killed three and injured another, not to mention the agony of those families who lost loved ones.

Just moments earlier, the Nissan’s driver had parked on the side of the road to accommodate a passenger who had taken sick. She exited the vehicle, along with her sick passenger and a second occupant, Omar Guzman. A third passenger, Gerardo Cortez, stayed in the front seat of the car.

According to the California Highway Patrol’s report, the car accident occurred at about 12:30 a.m. when Debbie Sumi swerved off the road in her Jeep, striking the Nissan, as well as its driver and sick passenger. Both were killed instantly.

Of the other two passengers, Guzman was far enough away to avoid the accident, while Cortez was thrown from the front seat and landed in front of the car. Scraped up, but mostly fine, Cortez avoided the worst of the crash.

Meanwhile, the Jeep careened away from the crushed Nissan, before flipping over and coming to a rest. Neither Sumi nor her passenger was reported to be wearing seatbelts, and the latter was crushed to death when the SUV flipped over.

Sumi suffered serious injuries and is currently in a California trauma center. She is also under arrest on suspicion of drunk driving.
