High numbers of work-related disabilities are due to desk jobs

High numbers of work-related injuries are due to sitting in front of a computer all day.

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke reports that Americans spend tens of billions of dollars each year on medical treatment for low back pain. Even those people who exercise before or after work suffer from higher rates of chronic back pain issues if they sit at a desk for hours at a stretch each day.

People are not designed for an inactive lifestyle but many are required to sit in their cars to and from work and stay at their desks all day. Following are some tips for maintaining a healthy back while sitting at a desk:

  • Use proper posture by sitting up straight and keeping your feet planted on the floor – not crossed – about shoulder width apart.
  • Position your keyboard and mouse at hand-height and close enough to your body so you are not reaching or twisting to use them.
  • Align your monitor about two to three inches above your eye level and not so far away that you have to lean forward to see the screen.
  • Use an office chair that provides lumbar support without tipping your body forward.
  • Take hourly breaks to get up and move around, using those breaks to stretch your arms, shoulders and legs.
  • Use a headset or speakerphone to avoid cradling your telephone between your shoulder and ear.

Stand-up desks and large medicine balls are becoming more popular in the workplace. However, back-related workers compensation claims still affect a vast majority of U.S. employees over the course of their lives.
