What are the top causes of workplace injuries?

Although the top causes of workplace injuries vary from one year to the next, some accidents always remain at the top of the list.

As a worker, regardless of industry, you need to know that trouble is lurking around every corner. This isn't mean to scare you, but instead to ensure that you do whatever you can to preserve your good health.

Here is a list of some of the most common causes of workplace injuries:

  • Overexertion
  • Same level falls
  • Struck by equipment or another object
  • Falls to a lower level (such as from scaffolding to the ground)
  • Bodily reactions
  • Roadway incidents
  • Slip without falling
  • Causing in or compressed by an object or equipment
  • Repetitive motion injury
  • Struck against equipment or another object

Some of these workplace accidents are easier to avoid than others.

Overexertion, for example, can be kept out of play by simply taking breaks when you feel that you are pushing yourself to your limit.

Other accidents, however, such as falls to a lower level, are much more difficult to prevent. Although there are things you can do to promote a safe work environment, accidents can and do happen from time to time.

Even when you do your best to avoid trouble, you could suffer a workplace injury. If this happens, you need to take the following steps:

  • Request immediate medical attention (which often means calling for an ambulance)
  • Report the accident and your injuries to your employer
  • Learn more about your legal rights

While focusing on your health and well being is most important, you also want to understand your legal rights. This typically means the right to file a workers' compensation claim.

There is no guarantee that your claim will be approved right away, but you have the right to seek the compensation you deserve.

If you receive a denial letter, you can file an appeal with the hope of having it overturned in the future.

A workplace injury can change your life in many ways, so don't hesitate to receive the best possible medical treatment while also learning more about any compensation you can receive.
